There is / There are - Simple Past Affirmative

 

The Simple Past Affirmative is done with the simple past form of the verb 'to be' as shown below:

Singular

There was

Plural

There were

 

Examples:

 

Singular

There was a man at the corner of the street

There was a glass on the table

There was a boy in the classroom

 

Plural

There were two men at the corner of the street

There were three glasses on the table

There were four boys in the classroom

There was an accident in the road today but fortunately no one was seriously injured

There was a bomb on the train today, under the seat I was in. When I saw it, I calmly picked it up and threw it thru the window and it went off

There was a delicious dessert at the restaurant we had lunch yesterday. Someday I wanna go back there again just for the dessert

There was a wonderful dress at that shop last week but I was out of money and I couldnīt afford it then someone else did

There were some crashed cars and a dead man on the street today. I donīt know what happened but one of the drivers seemed to be wasted

There were dozens of messages for you on your computer when I last saw. Itīs gonna take you ages to read all of them

There were lots of Brazilian politicians on the plane that crashed down yesterday. They all must be in heaven now... or in hell
