Grammar There is / There are - Simple Past Affirmative   The Simple Past Affirmative is done with the simple past form of the verb 'to be' as shown below:     Regular Singular There was Plural There were   Examples:   Singular There was a man at the corner of the street There was a glass on the table There was a boy in the classroom   Plural There were two men at the corner of the street There were three glasses on the table There were four boys in the classroom   Now, as usual, let´s practice. Read, listen and repeat.   Singular 01 There was an accident in the road today but fortunately no one was seriously injured 02 There was a bomb on the train today, under the seat I was in. When I saw it, I calmly picked it up and threw it thru the window and it went off 03 There was a delicious dessert at the restaurant we had lunch yesterday. Someday I wanna go back there again just for the dessert 04 There was a wonderful dress at that shop last week but I was out of money and I couldn´t afford it then someone else did 05 There was dust all over the furniture. The maid isn´t being efficient, unfortunately we´ll have to give her the sack     Plural 01 There were many eggs in the basket when the little girl stumbled, dropped all of them and fell over. She got egged 02 There were horses, zebras, lions, bears and elephants in the zoo. There was a lion eating a monkey, it was horrible to see 03 There were some crashed cars and a dead man on the street today. I don´t know what happened but one of the drivers seemed to be wasted 04 There were dozens of messages for you on your computer when I last saw. It´s gonna take you ages to read all of them 05 There were lots of Brazilian politicians on the plane that crashed down yesterday.
