Uncountable Nouns (Mass Nouns)

 

Uncountable Nouns canīt be measured in numbers and they have no plural. They are expressed in undetermined quantity since they canīt be counted (thatīs the reason they are called uncountable). They are also known as Mass Nouns.

 

It is common to use a piece of, some or a lot of with some of these nouns as the examples below:

The businessman will need to buy new pieces of equipment for his new plant

Fog

Jonas almost crashed his car due to the fog in the road as he couldnīt see where he was going to

Furniture

The couple has to buy a new piece of furniture for their living room

Garbage

What do we have to do with all these pieces of  garbage? Can we do away with it?

Gas

I can smell a lot of gas in the air. I think there are several types of gases

Happiness

Rogerīs happiness is to spend his life with those he loves around him

Information

Are you lost? Do you need any information? Yes, please. I need a piece of information

Ketchup

Gabrielle loves plenty of ketchup on her fries. She consumes two tubes a month

They feel much love for each other. They are so in love, thatīs pretty

Mayonnaise

When you go to the supermarket, please donīt forget to buy some bottles of mayonnaise

Meat

The housewife goes to the butchery and buys five pounds of meat. She likes different meats

The little boy is thirsty for some milk. His mother is picking up two bottles of milk from the shelf

Janeīs husband needs to make a bank loan because he wants some money to buy a new house

Besides plenty of ketckup, she likes a little mustard sometimes, but not often

Oil

The cook needs some oil to fry the chicken and the fish. She will need to buy six bottles of oil

The waiter brought two plates of pasta to the couple. They were huge servings

Powder

The young parents have to buy some baby powder for their baby because they are out of it

Rain

We need some rain because the air is very dry today and the air pollution is terrible

Research

In order to compose this project, we gotta do a piece of research (gotta = got to) (got to = have to)

Rice

Brazilian people eat a lot of rice and beans daily. The farms produce tons of rice grains each year

Salt

Donīt oversalt your food, it is not good for your health. You only need a little salt

Sand

The desert is a very dry place with no water. There is plenty of sand in the desert

Sugar

The housewife has to go the supermarket again. She needs some sugar. She will buy four packs of sugar

Water

Would you like some water? Yes, please, I am thirsty. I want two glasses of water

Wine

I would like to have some wine after dinner, is it possible? I want a bottle of wine
