Verb Conjugation: Past Continuous - Affirmative (click on the verb to download/listen)

 

The Past Continuous is used to express actions in progress that were occurring and were interrupted; not completed. Notice that another action happened in the Simple Past right after the Past Continuous, separated by when.

 

Examples:

 

Singular:

I was studying English when my mother called me to have dinner

You were going to work when you saw your friends and decided to have breakfast with them

He was speaking to his wife when she slapped his face

She was enjoying the party when her parents called her and told her it was time to go home

It was hunting an animal when it was attacked by surprise

 

Plural:

We were discussing our relationship when our kids entered the room

You were missing your daughter a lot when she came back from the US

They were finishing their test when the teacher told them to stop
